However, several countries, such as Germany and Switzerland, have included de minimis rules in their national regulations, especially with regard to asset management oriented institutions which have negligible market risk positions.84 Assuming the approval of the national authorities (subject to compliance with the criteria for de minimis exception), local supervisors are free to monitor the relevant exposures in the non de minimis institutions more carefully. The approach is reasonable for smaller asset management and private banking institutions, which do not take substantial amounts of risk on their own books, as they execute on behalf of their clients. The important distinction is between organizations subject to the standard model approach and those subject to the internal model approach, as this difference determines how risk has to be supported by capital. Thus it fixes capital that could be used for other business purposes.85

You may want to make a habit of timing portions of your scripts. This can come in handy when finding and fixing performance bottlenecks. Timing scripts is easy. At the point in your script where the stopwatch should start, add the following line: set start_timer to current date Then, at the end of the timed process, use this line: set run_time to (current date) - start_timer It always makes a good impression to display the number of seconds a script took to run, especially if the process has recently been done manually. If you need to measure script times in fraction of seconds, a scripting addition such as GetMilliSec and Jon s Commands X will provide a suitable solution.

Things can change dramatically once your children leave home. Managing scripts in other locations can be a drag, especially when they break for any reason and your only source of information is a person with a distinct inability to form meaningful sentences. In this case, a program such as Timbuktu, Apple Remote Access, or the free Chicken of the VNC can be a real lifesaver; you can log in remotely and see the problem for yourself. They are easy to find using Google. When this is not possible, you will want to make solid arrangements regarding the support of your off-site scripts. The following are a few tips.

While writing scripts for other people to use, you have to always keep in mind that some of the values you defined in your script will be subject to change. Font names, type sizes, folder paths, usernames the list goes on. You have a few ways to manage these script user preferences. Picking the format that works for you has to do with the frequency of the changes and the savvy of the users. For not-so-savvy users who need to change settings more frequently, you can use a dialog box start-up screen. Every time the script starts, a dialog box appears letting the user know what is about to happen. The dialog box sneaks in a button called Settings that, when clicked, takes the user through a set of dialog boxes with text input or buttons that account for the different settings they can change. These settings are then stored in properties for the next time the script runs. This is useful also for the first time the script runs when the user may have to initialize a few values. The option for savvier users with scripts that may need to change every few months is to simply place the well-named properties at the top of the script and teach those users how to open the script and change these properties.

One aspect of deploying script solutions in other locations or multiple systems that can become a nightmare is version control. Keeping track of script versions to track updates and system disparity can be challenging, and many things can go wrong. One thing you have to do when version control becomes an issue is to sit down and work out a simple system for dealing with it. A good start would be a property at the top of the script with a version number and another one with the last date of modification. Another simple idea is to add release notes in the description area, as shown in Figure 25-1.
