Before accessing these known goodies, you will have to go through an object of class source. The source object you will work with most is the library source. On English-speaking systems, this source object is named Library, although the name may differ for other languages. In the library source, you will find your playlists and, in there, your tracks. Other sources may be useful as well. If an iPod is connected to your Mac, for example, the iPod becomes its own source with playlists and tracks. Some other source types are audio CD, MP3 CD, and shared library. In turn, each source object can contain various playlist elements. For example, the library source contains a special playlist of class library playlist. This library playlist is also called Library (or its equivalent in other languages) and contains every file, uniform resource locator (URL), and shared track that iTunes is aware of. The library source can also contain any number of user-defined playlists, each one containing whatever file, URL, and shared tracks you put in it. So, in order to work with a particular track (or tracks), you have to refer to a specific playlist in a specific source. Figure 26-1 illustrates this part of the iTunes containment hierarchy, showing how different kinds of tracks are contained by different kinds of playlists, which in turn are contained by the source elements of the application.

Creating new playlists in iTunes is simple: just use the make command, optionally passing the new playlist s name via its with properties parameter: tell application "iTunes" make new user playlist with properties {name:"My First Playlist"} end tell You don t need to specify a location since iTunes will automatically add the new playlist object to your main Library source object. You can find out the names of all your playlists using this: tell application "iTunes" name of every user playlist of source "Library" end tell Creating new track objects is a little different. To add existing tracks to a user playlist, use the duplicate command to copy the desired track objects from one playlist (usually the main library playlist) to the other. To import new audio files into iTunes, use the add command. iTunes will automatically create the corresponding track objects for you in the main library playlist. If you want, you can use the add command s optional to parameter to add them to a user-defined playlist at the same time. Script 26-1 allows the user to enter a keyword. It then creates a new playlist based on that word and duplicates to that new playlist every track object whose name contains that keyword. As an example, I used the word Yellow. See Figure 26-2 for the resulting playlist.
